Chapter Nine

They stayed quiet and close together as they made their way from the swamp back to their camp, or at least what remained of it. There were still bloody bits of Tanaka strewn about, although it looked like a few scavengers might have already raided the area and stolen the more noticeable pieces of his corpse. There were footprints of small and medium-sized creatures around the gore that could have been birds or could have been lizards, or, for all Eccleston could say, could have been some evolutionary half-way point between them. There were also huge footprints left behind by the T. Rex creature, and several of them had smashed equipment or gear at the center of the depression. Overall, the state of things didn’t look good for them. It looked like their chances of surviving were significantly lessened.

“I do have some good news,” Lerner said as she investigated the destruction. “Probably the only good news, though. The beacon is undamaged, and it looks like it was still working even through all the chaos.”

Gruber got closer to it and checked the display screen. “A ship is responding to the distress signal! I can’t tell if it’s the Bishop or from something other than Skurzon, though.”

“Why would we even care whether or not the Skurzon Corporation was the one that found us?” Eccleston asked. “Rescue is rescue, no matter who it is.”

Some subtle play of emotions went over Gruber’s face. Although he couldn’t tell what the look meant, Eccleston got an uncomfortable feeling about it. Lerner, too, watched Gruber and Macklemore with keen interest.

“Right. Of course,” Gruber said. “But the Bishop might be actively searching for us, while others probably aren’t.”

“I don’t care which ship ends up coming to get us as long as it gets us off this island,” Nest said. “It’s not going to be here right away, though. Just because we can see it coming doesn’t mean it’ll be here in five minutes. We still need to survive until that moment. Come on, everyone. Let’s gather what supplies we can still use and get them to another site. I don’t want to still be here if that T. Rex-like thing comes back for us again.”

Only the one beacon was still in one piece, the rest having been trampled by the Tyrannosaur, but it was working and that was hopefully all they would really need. Even if they hadn’t decided that this was no longer a safe place to make camp, none of them would have wanted to stay here anyway given the bits of bone and gore spread around that were all that was left of Tanaka. Everyone quickly repacked everything that could be salvaged and moved it to a new site, an area with a dense surrounding of trees and brush that would hopefully keep out further unexpected and uncanny predators. Just to be on the safe side, however, Captain Nest instructed everyone that remained how to select long sturdy branches and carve the ends to sharpened points like spears.
